If you are coming to the gym with the intention of losing weight then you are going to want to burn the maximum amount of calories possible and the target of many is to do this in the shortest amount of time possible. In order to lose one pound of weight you need to create a deficit of 3500 calories.

In this article I’m going to suggest cardio exercises to lose weight by burning the largest amount of calories. Of course, it is essential that you combine this exercise program with a healthy diet as otherwise will be adding many calories to your body that you will have to burn off.

The High Intensity Exercises

One approach you can take to burn calories is to get on the machines in the gym that are incredibly high intensity. These machines generally include the treadmill and the stair climber and these are capable of making you burn over 1000 calories in a single hour. The problem is with this exercise intensity is that you are very unlikely to be up to keep it up and even if you do manage to do that for an hour you are probably never going to want to repeat the experience. If you are very fit and healthy you might be able to do it, but then if you are looking to lose weight it’s unlikely you are in the kind of physical condition to allow you to do this.

Choose Something Suitable To Your Fitness Level

It is very important that you don’t burn yourself out; therefore it is essential that you find an exercise that you can do for a long time without it becoming too unbearable. The best cardio exercises are going to be ones suitable to your fitness level and while running definitely burns more calories, walking is an activity that still burns calories but does so in a way that is much less intense for the walker.

Choose Something You Like

Some people find certain gym activities more enjoyable than others so if you are coming to the gym for the first time then it is important to find out what you like. The first thing I ask anyone who comes in for a consultation with me to lose weight is whether there are any sports they enjoy because these are a good place to start if you want to lose weight. I find that people often underestimate how many calories they think they are burning while playing sports; they can really be one of the best cardio exercises to lose weight.

If you want to remain in the gym there are plenty of machines that simulate popular activities, so if you enjoy cycling then you might find a static cycle machine in the gym is the perfect option for you. The benefit of doing this in the gym is you can control exactly how much you want to burn and how much effort you want to put in.

  • Enjoyed your content on cardio. Personally, I have found that the 2 machines that have given me the best results without overwhelming bordom are the treadmill and the stairmaster. I usually do a half an hour each after a pretty intense anerobic workout with weights.
