According to the British Heart Foundation, 31,4% of men and 24,2% of women have been diagnosed with heart disease, and one of the most common kinds of heart diseases is high blood pressure or hypertension.

In most cases, high blood pressure tends to be associated with an increase in the heart rate (pulse), and the majority of people who suffers from heart disease is treated for both; however, it is possible to have hypertension and, at the same time, a low heart rate. This condition can be the product of several causes, being one hypertension accompanied with metabolic problems (e.g. thyroid problems), or the incidence of a medication that lowers the pulse.

Also, in athletes, who are known for having a low heart rate due to the amount of physical activity they do regularly, it is common that hypertension is not associated with an increase in the heart rate.

Usually, low heart rate high blood pressure is detected because the person gets tired easily, feels weak or experiment dizziness, it is important in these cases to ask for medical advice.

There are various alternatives that can help people with this condition. On the first hand, it is important to check if the symptoms are caused by a medication that the person has been talking lately; in this case, the only recommendation would be: ask your doctor!

Suffering from another disease (e.g. diabetes) can also have repercussions that generate new symptoms, because of this, any condition or disease that the person has must be first under medical control. It is not rare that, when one condition is treated, the other disappears as a consequence.

Finally, the most important alternative for preventing and controlling low heart rate high blood pressure is carrying on with a healthy lifestyle mainly based on two aspects: diet and exercise.

Diet and Exercise

The diet must be a high fiber/ low cholesterol one, very rich in fruits and vegetables. The most important thing is not to be rigid with the diet, but constant. You can skip the diet a few times a week, but do not get used to do that or abandon the diet by any case. Also, to follow a diet does not mean that you are going to eat less; especially with low heart rate is crucial to have a good representation of all food groups in your daily meals, the point is not to be excessive with carbs and saturated fat. Reducing your alcohol consumption and your smoking habits help too!

Diet along with physical activity is the perfect combination in this case. Between 30 and 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise will help reduce hypertension and will prevent or reduce obesity which is related to a regulation of high blood pressure.

Nevertheless, when high blood pressure is accompanied by low heart rate, not only the amount of exercise should not exceed 45-50 minutes a day but the exercise itself should not be very demanding; jogging at a slow pace or walking with a fast rhythm would be ideal options.
