There could be many reasons for lack of oxygen in an individual’s blood including respiratory and lung disorders (chronic bronchitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, etc.), lack of adequate oxygen in the air (altitude sickness), circulatory disorders (malfunctioning of the cardiac system, heart ailments, etc.), and anaemia, infection of the respiratory system and even rarer, metabolic problems and more. Reason being any, lack of adequate oxygen in our body results in serious consequences, and if left untreated can even prove fatal.

However, just as there are reasons, there are solutions. So how do you cope with this lack of oxygen in the blood? The key lies in knowing and understanding the symptoms of lack of oxygen in our blood.

Some Of The Key Symptoms

Respiratory Distress:

The first sign of lack of oxygen in your blood would be a marked shortness of breath. It may begin gradually, only impacting you during times of physical exertion; but as your oxygen saturation continues to fall, the shortness will increase and become chronic, even affecting you during times of complete rest.

A Feeling Of Tiredness:

A low oxygen level in your blood would begin depriving your vital organs of the oxygen and energy they need to function optimally. The result? A chronic feeling of fatigue. In some cases, the fatigue may even come over suddenly and unexpectedly. So if you feel unusually tired, it may be time to get your blood work checked for any anomalies.

Confusion:

The lack of adequate oxygen in your blood will also begin affecting your brain function and through that, your cognitive abilities. You may experience alternate bouts of confusion or even disorientation and in extreme cases, black outs. This may also give you unexplained headaches as your brain struggles with the lack of oxygen supply.

In case you experience one or any of the above symptoms and have no reason to do so, we advise you to contact your doctor without delay. The best way to cope with the lack of oxygen in your blood is to get prompt medical aid. Go to your doctor, get diagnosed and begin your treatment at the earliest.

Immediate Measures To Take To Ease The Condition:

  • Sit in a resting position, but do not lie down
  • Practice deep breathing for five minutes. Take monitored, slow breaths and feel your lungs expand and contract as you do
  • If possible, make use of an oxygen tank to ensure a pure and unbroken supply of oxygen until medical help arrives

If there is no underlying medical condition to explain the lack of oxygen in your blood, it may be time to take a thorough look at your lifestyle. Eat healthy, fresh and pure. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables and drink pure water. Exercise daily for optimum heart health. Spend at least 20 minutes of your day outdoors in the fresh air.

Keep yourself as stress free as possible. Some types of Yoga (pranayama) can also facilitate better breathing. Practice these along with daily meditation to keep your body and mind healthy!
