Going to the gym regularly is great for your health, but for some people getting to the gym can be difficult. This may be because you live far away from the gym and getting to it takes too much time or you don’t have the time because of work and other commitments to get to a gym, others find this simply don’t like the environment in a gym and want to work out elsewhere. Not having access to a gym is no reason for you not to get fit and home gyms are very easy to set up and you will not have to spend a fortune in order to do so. In this article I’m going to outline some of the benefits and ways that you can establish a small gym or workout space in your own home.

Choosing Your Home Gyms Location

One of the first decisions you’re going to need to make is where you want to establish the gym in your house. For people with a cellar this is often the first consideration as the space is usually not used and the gym equipment would not clutter the rest of the house. However, in a cellar it is often damp and this can be an unpleasant environment for exercising.

If you have a spare room, this is often a great place to set up a home gym, but you will have to sacrifice it if you have a guest to stay. Whichever route you choose to have your home gym and make sure that it is well ventilated and well lit. For those without extra space for gym equipment to be permanently in place, they may want to consider smaller equipment such as a folding treadmill.

If you live in an older house you may want to consider the benefits of having a gym on the ground floor. If you use a high impact machine, such as a treadmill, upstairs you may find that the sound travels through the floorboards quite easily.

Choosing Your Equipment

Your home gym equipment should be made up of the equipment that you like to use the most. Unlike in a gym you do not have to put in machines that you will not use. Also you should make sure that you research carefully to find the right sort of machines for your home gym, what you buy will depend on your budget and space constraints.

Other than considering workout equipment you should also think about what other items you might want in your own gym. In many commercial gyms you will find many televisions and people like to watch these to take their minds off the exercise. Consider making your home gym in a room that has a television or installing a television in the room you choose. Other forms of entertainment are also a good idea, such as a sound system. Make sure that your gym has a space to keep fresh water and it might be a good idea to have several clean towels around.
