Going to the gym for a first time, whatever your fitness goals can be a daunting experience. There are sure to be many other people that who’ve been going for years and there is a much greater fitness level than you. What’s important is to remember that all of these people were beginners once too and they will all be understanding and even respectful of your goal to achieve fitness. Don’t worry that you do not know how to use equipment, and do not be afraid to ask the staff for help, that is what they’re there for. This article is going to look at some basic tips that newcomers to work out should consider.

Tips About Using Weight Machines

The machines at the gym look complicated, and some of them are. This can be confusing for someone who is a first time user and if you can’t figure out how to use the machine, ask someone for help. If you have to force the machine then you are doing something wrong, ask a member of staff and they will show you how to set how much you want to lift as well as adjusting the seat position. Being in the right position is essential to having effective exercise and the staff member will even be able to offer you advice on how much you should lift.

Wear Clean Clothing

Many people who first start working out think that coming to work out is a place where they are going to get smelly so there is no real need to wear a freshly washed shirt. As someone who has worked in several gyms I can tell you first hand that old sweat on clothing smells very different to fresh sweat caused by exercise that day. Please remember to wear clean clothing and wash it after each use. Don’t see a workout as an excuse to not bother dressing properly as it would be unpleasant for other people who are exercising.

Check The Time Limits

Many gyms, especially in busy times, will enforce time limits on the machines. If you have been to the orientation, which is another must for new attendees, then it is likely you will know about time restrictions. Some machines, especially those related cardio work will have limits on how long you can work out and then maybe a signup sheet we can put your name in a queue to use it. For regulars, jumping the queue is considered rather read but don’t worry, most will forgive you if you are new, although you will have to give up the machine for them.

Wipe The Gym Equipment Down

Most gyms will provide you a towel to use, or if they don’t make sure you bring your own. The tower is not just used for wiping sweat off yourself but when you are done with the machine you must also wipe it down. There is nothing less pleasant than coming to use a machine that is covered in fresh sweat.
